The Business Behind the Name

Having problems trying to name your business?
-Talk to your partners out loud and say the name you are thinking of as if you were talking to an investor.
-Never make a decision on the spot! Always go through your options and think on them.
-Trust your gut and make sure to do what you feels right for your company.
-Keep an open mind for opinions coming from everywhere

While watching this documentary I found the beginning most interesting because of how hard it is just to come up with a company title. I honestly never really though about how much time and effort actually goes into the business names. Although now that I think about how much the name can impact business it has opened up a new world for me. For example, looking back into the video at the beginning he wanted to name the internet company "NexTown" rather than "Gov Works." So the guys talked it over and role played as if they were talking business and they decided that the first choice wasn't cutting the deal.

I have done some more research on creating a good name for a business and I found some pretty good resources. One being " tips to naming your business" an article written just for tips for creating a name. Some of the tips included are, make sure that your name sounds good when said aloud, using specifics, making sure you can trademark these names, and beware of the initials. To learn more about what each of these mean head over to the article and you can read more about each point.

There are also terrible mistakes that businesses makes while naming their companies. I found an article called "7 Terrible Naming Mistakes Entrepreneurs Make" these mistakes are usually deal breakers for newly made businesses. So be careful if you are trying to "creative" with your name, and if you believe that your domain name has to match your business name, it doesn't. Also try to steer away from using an obscure domain extension to spell your name. You should also try to stay away from making your name to niche. You don't want to have the problem of being stuck with something just because your name is to simple and closed off. Do not try to be cool and mysterious, people do not want that. I do not think I have ever logged onto my computer and was excited to try and search for a hidden website. So these are a few things that I found that interested me in naming a business.

Not so Fun Home

I began my graphic novel class with little to no knowledge about what I would actually learn. Within the first five minutes of being in class, and reading the great novel "Fun Home" by Alison Bechdel my mind was completely blown.  I never knew that there were any graphic novels that didn't contain super hero's, or Snoopy. From the first page to the last you dive into the authors life like you were actually there.

This book opened my eyes to new ways of learning from the way the author portrayed her daily life, and the struggles that was entailed to the light blue color she used to create a mood. While reading i realized that I too have struggled with some of the exact same things that she did. Well, it would be opposite since we are different sexes, but I emotionally related to almost every single page. Using our book, "Understanding Comics" by Scott Mccloud I have discovered how the artist can actually use there own image, but not make it extremely detailed. There is a scale that shows you a simple smiley face to what could be known as a mug shot look for creative purposes. With this novel I would say it meets in the middle for my own belief that she wanted to keep the readers imagination going throughout the book. I also believe that she didn't want to describe herself with as little detail because at the time this novel took place she didn't know exactly who she was.

From looking at my own life and reading about hers I have finally come to realize that I am not the only one struggling. There are others out there who go through even worse situations. Now that I have finished the novel I have learned how to handle certain adversities.

Looking deeper into the novel you can find motifs on every single page. One of the ones that I connected with was the constant sighting of books. We are all books in a sense because we all put on a cover, but we all have our different stories that are within. The stories that are within this story can actually give hints to what Alison is trying to say. She tells many stories within this novel, but she does so well with the structure of it all that it is now on my top 5 books to read.

The Internet: Privacy Personal Space and Us

Virtual Revolution Episode 3
You may not know, but the internet isn't as private as you think. We are all monitored every time we hit enter. From government associated watching, to google sending information to businesses to send us weekly updates. Many think that this is crossing the lines, but others think that it is a great way to protect us. I can agree with saying it can help us because of marketing purposes. This is one of the best marketing strategies that has ever existed. For example, Pizza Hut was the first restaurant that you could order from on the internet. This was the first thing to happen to get the ball rolling after the government opened up social networking to citizens. Other ways that this can be beneficial is through online shopping. When buying from different online stores, a thing called a cookie is sent to and from your computer. When sent to the users computer it tracks what you click on and where you go to shop, or visit. This then gets sent back to the main processor that then sends you different ads, and deals to your computer. These are the ads that pop up on random sites, and that are shown on the sides of the screen while you surf the web.

Although these are great for marketing purposes, sometimes the internet is not as helpful. For example, back in 2006 AOL leaked over 650,000 searches from the past 3 months. This leaked not only what the search was, but who searched for it. The users names were not posted, but a specific number was and the place in which it was searched was attached. So in this state they investigated one user who had been searching multiple things from a city in Georgia. After a bit of searching they found this older women who was terrified to find out that they tracked her down by leaked search history. This makes me also understand where some say that this is stepping on personal space.

Understanding the risk factors that come from the internet every time you log on is important. From 1994 until now we see many upgrades that have come to the web. With this information you must understand that your lives are in the hands of a virtual world. From buying things online, to reading an article about how the ecosystem is dying, someone is always watching. Personal space, and privacy are in a sense thrown out the window once you have entered into a site. We have found that they can track you just from a simple search, and we have also seen that with a simple click they can know everything about us. Social media sites are the most informed sites on the internet due to the fact that you must put so much personal information in. After doing this you can not take it back, due to the fact that your information isn't only stored on our personal computer. The internet is growing, and our personal lives aren't so personal anymore, you just have to be cautious about what you put onto the web.

To Divide or to Connect... The Internet May Never Know

Virtual Revolution Episode 2
Packet switching is the database that sends and receives information from computer to computer (email, instant message, etc.) The internet was turning into a form of Democracy to give the people a way to connect, and a way to gather information. This changed communication for American citizens drastically. Before this if you weren't a professional, you couldn't have an opinion. After the internet upgraded, the people became powerful. If you have a way of communication without something to block it, and you have the information that is readily available to you, you are super charged. Meaning that with a simple post on a media site, you can build up, or tear down anything. This can connect the public by giving them each a weapon as you might say. This is normally found in politics, and celebrity outlooks.

As American citizens, we have always had this power, just no way to use it. Most of the information we want to put out there was too risky, but then wiki leaks comes into play. This website is available for all societies in the world to post and leak information, but it was mainly used to give out government secrets that aren't easily found. You might ask how is this website still active? Well, using an army grade inscription and anonymous tags, the page is nearly impossible to crack. This is where it begins to divide. Instead of facing the issues and solutions as a group, we tend to hide behind our screens writing forums, blogs as we tear each other down.

Now, we can see how connection and division are happening within the political world. This can be easily evaded by understanding that each system has its own personal problems that can be fixed by regulations. Is this going to happen? Probably not because of the amount of greed that has taken over. For instance, I've been alive for most of the internet’s existence and each year it has gotten worse. We have so many new sites that can be used like Wiki Leaks like Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, etc. These are all social media sites that allow us to instantly put up facts, and fake information on the web. It comes to show that the reason most "geeks" go head to head against the government is because they are now on a level playing field. With this, the people have regained the power of the government, and I personally believe that one day this is going to turn into a war between the government and the citizens.

The Web and The "Great Leveling of Humanity." Destruction, or Great Revolution?

You might ask yourself, "What does it mean that the web can provide The Great Leveling of Humanity"? Well, my fellow educational seekers, I am here to help you understand the topic just a bit more. When first approaching the idea, you must realize where the Internet began. Watching the "Virtual Revolution" you can see how both destructive and productive the web is.

The Virtual Revolution, Episode 1

Episode 1 shows how the web was created and how it has influenced politics. For example, a simple blog can be a huge game changer when it comes to politics by publicly broadcasting issues. How, you ask? Well, there is strength in numbers! Ory Okolloh began as a blogger, writing about the civil rights in Kenya. She did this for the sole reason to reach the public to show the mistreatment from their government and wanted to make things easier for her and the rest of the people who lived there. Oh she did, but that one blog had a domino effect which then created an all out revolt in the governmental system.

One issue that the web was not prepared for was the mass amount of illegally downloaded music. Why is that such a big problem?  Here's why: Lets say you start a business in online marketing selling graphics that you have made and that your workers have made. Now, lets say someone hacks your site and starts handing them out willy nilly, how do you feel? What about your workers? Exactly, you are ready to fight and sue! Now that is what the hundreds of artists feel like everyday due to illegal consumers. This trend hit so quickly and well coded, it was pretty much impossible to stop. In episode one you will find that a young 18-year-old created a website called "Napster" to illegal look up and download music. Although this was a short lived website dating from 1999-2001, it was shut down and restricted.  Can not even imagine what the web can do now in 2017.

A few years later in 2010 we find  Mark Zuckerberg, the 26-year-old founder of the all-famous Facebook. Facebook took the world by a landslide and is still very popular today! In 6 years it hit over 600 million users, making it the fastest growing company in history! Now if that doesn't show you that the web will level humanity, by showing how hard of a grip it has on us then I am not sure what will.

Experiencer and innovator VALS results... about myself!

Taking the survey and finding out that I am an experiencer as a primary and an innovator as my secondary VALS, I find that it is very true. With the experiencer I do want everything, but I want to work to earn it. Usually I do find myself in the situation that I find songs and fashion statements first and then I get tired of them before most others. Some things I will go against even if they are mainstream, usually just depending on what is going on. I am most definitely up on the latest fashions, I most generally try to dress to impress wherever I go so when I find something new and "hip," I will wear it and rock it! The physical activity is iffy with me; if the activity is fun and what I want to do I will, but other than that I complain constantly until I am either finished, or if I'm told to leave. I do see myself as a social butterfly in most instants especially in large crowds. My friends are family, and "Lilo and Stitch" taught me when I was a child that Ohana means family and family never gets left behind. So with that you can say that I do believe that my friends are extremely important to me and my life. Spontaneous is a very good word to express my everyday life. I can go from being down in the dumps to being as hyper as an eight year old with sugar sticks. So taking this survey I am very pleased with my results as a primary.
Seeing innovator as my secondary without actually reading up on what it meant I was semi confused, but I was also very pleased. Looking through the definition and the main points of being an innovator I am very surprised how precise it is. From the moment I wake up I am taking in information from everywhere and everyone even if it is irrelevant to my life at that moment. I am pretty confident in all aspects, but I do agree that I'm confident enough to experiment with anything. I spend money like it is monopoly money at this point, if I like it I am more likely to buy it than to walk away. In another sense I am very picky about advertisers and advertisements. I usually think about them to much and read into it more than what is actually wanted. On all of my social media accounts I am very exposed internationally, but I like to see how far I can get. I am always worried about what my life is actually going to be when I grow up. From a job to my relationships, it is terrifying, but I like to think that in any form its going to happen so I had better be prepared for it. I'm not very religious at this point so science is becoming very credible in my life. When seeing new inventions and technologies I am very open to new opportunities and ideas. Sometimes I actually find myself looking for problems in the day so that I can figure out some way to fix it. Diving into my interests and activities it is infinite. I am vulnerable to new ideas, plans, activities and specifics of life.
